Gov. Paterson finally ‘ready’ to govern

An awkward situation arose Saturday night as Gov. Paterson and his wife, Michelle, hit the Hamptons party circuit, including the Southampton Hospital Gala. The next stop was to be Chris Cuomo‘s surprise 40th-birthday beach party, where State Attorney General Andrew Cuomo was toasting his younger brother. A call was made by one of the guests: “Would it be OK if I brought the governor?” The answer came back: “Not a good idea.” Other plans were made. At an earlier stop at a private house in Water Mill, Paterson admitted he wasn’t ready when Eliot Spitzer quit in disgrace and handed him the governor’s job. “Only now do I feel ready to govern. Not that I think I’ve done a bad job,” he said. When a sympathizer noted that he’d gotten a bad deal from President Obama, who urged him not to run for re-election, the gov responded, “He’s on my list, too.”
