Kardashian says she never wed for money, travels to Australia to ‘escape’

The only commitment Kim Kardashian can stick to is selling handbags Down Under.

“I’m trying to do the best that I can and it’s actually kind of an escape to come [to Australia],” Kardashian said in her first interview since announcing Monday that she was divorcing husband Kris Humphries after just 72 days.

“I really wanted to honor that commitment and stay here … and get my mind off things,” she added in an interview with Australian radio station 2Day FM.

Kim and her sister Khloe traveled to Australia this week to promote their new line of handbags.

Asked why she divorced Humphries and the details of the breakup, Kardashian, 31, said, “I’m not ready to go into the details of what went on in my marriage, but I do want to make clear that I would never marry for a TV show or money. … It’s really ridiculous that I even have to defend that.”

Ridiculous was the order of the day coming out of the Kardashian camp as Kim’s mom Kris Jenner also said her daughter’s wedding to the Nets player was no money-making scam.

“It makes me feel sad that some people are reacting that way,” Jenner said. “It certainly wasn’t a sham, certainly wasn’t for TV. We have enough going on on our show that we don’t have to make things up. She felt that she was in love with him.”

During her appearance on NBC’s “Today” show this morning, Jenner tried to debunk that E! bought the rights to the wedding for a whopping $17.9 million.

“One of the rumors is that we sold the television rights for millions of dollars — not true. We profited, she profited from the wedding? Absolutely false,” she said in an appearance where she was trying to plug her new book.

Asked to clarify, a shameless Jenner said, “They made some money for the pictures that were sold and things like that, but at the end of the day, that money went towards the wedding and Kim had to pay a great deal of money [for the wedding ceremony and reception].”

Jenner said she was as surprised as everyone else was that the marriage was ending.

“I had no idea there was a problem at the time. It saddens all of us,” she said.

As for how her daughter feels, Jenner said, “She’s sick about it.”

In a second interview segment on the “Today” show at 10 a.m., Jenner said, “I told Kim, ‘You’ve made this decision.’ … I met and married Bruce Jenner within five months.”

Jenner said she hasn’t spoken to Humphries.

The wedding reportedly cost $10 million, but the bride and groom didn’t have to pay a penny, thanks to in-kind gifts.

The pair also reportedly scored $15 million on the wedding TV special and $2 million more peddling photos to People.

E! said in a statement that any insinuation that it orchestrated Kardashian’s lavish wedding “is completely false.”

The cable network said in a statement that “the Kardashians have authentically lived their lives on camera for a long time and Kim’s wedding is one of the many real-life events that the family has shared with viewers.”
