George Clooney thinks Ryan Gosling should have been Sexiest Man Alive

A growing movement online believes that People magazine made the wrong decision in declaring Bradley Cooper the Sexiest Man Alive this week — it’s members think the honor should have gone to Ryan Gosling. Now, George Clooney has weighed in on People’s snub of his “Ides of March” co-star.

Clooney has won People’s Sexiest Man Alive title twice and told “Extra” that he wished Gosling had been selected this year.

“[Gosling] really wants it … The whole time we were on the set of ‘Ides,’ he was like, ‘How did you pull that off?'” Clooney joked at the premiere of his movie, “The Descendants.” “So I called up Brad Pitt and we worked with him for weeks on the walk. We told him how to train.”

BRADLEY COOPER CROWNED ‘SEXIEST MAN ALIVE’

Almost as soon as it was announced that Cooper had clinched the title, some began speaking out that Gosling would have been a better choice. Their argument is that Gosling is one of the most highly adored actors of the moment, while Cooper has largely lost buzz since his breakthrough performance in “The Hangover,” despite offerings this year like “Limitless” and “The Hangover Part II.”

A writer at E! Online opined, “Isn’t that très coveted title supposed to be for the sexiest, most talked about, most popular man of the year? How about the über-hot, crazy talented Ryan Gosling?”

The Web site TheFrisky.com wrote an open letter to Gosling on the matter. A writer for the site said, “I think it’s really noble of you to turn down People‘s ‘Sexiest Man Alive’ title and let Bradley Cooper have the so-called ‘honor.’ I can only assume that’s what happened because after a year in which you starred in three big movies (‘Crazy Stupid Love,’ ‘Drive,’ and ‘Ides of March’), stopped a street fight over a painting, and inspired numerous internet memes, it just wouldn’t make sense to bestow the title on anyone else.”

FANS MOURN KIM KARDASHIAN BREAKUP

The Web site Buzzfeed, which joined in a vigil outside the Dash boutique in Soho when Kim Kardashian filed for divorce from Kris Humphries, has taken on the cause, too, organizing an online petition. “We believe People Magazine made a huge mistake by choosing Bradley Cooper as the 2011 Sexiest Man Alive,” the petition reads.

The site even organized a humorous protest outside People magazine’s office yesterday. “Ryan was robbed,” one protest poster read. Other fans wore masks of Gosling’s face.

Protestors chanted, “Bradley Cooper is just fine, but Ryan Gosling is divine.”

People has yet to respond to the controversy.
