The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge found the most low-key way possible to celebrate their first wedding anniversary this weekend. Rather than renewing their vows, or heading on an exotic vacation or throwing a lavish party, Kate Middleton and Prince William celebrated their first year together by heading to a wedding of two close friends in Suffolk.

“Will and Kate attended a friend’s wedding in Suffolk yesterday,” a source tells E! News. “The couple were at St. Andrew’s Church in Wingfield, near Stradbroke, for the marriage of their close friends Hannah Gillingham and Robert Carter.”

Gillingham is reportedly one of Middleton’s closest friends from Marlborough College, where the two played on several sports teams together.

The Duchess was photographed walking down a dirt road to her pal’s wedding, holding a brown umbrella over her head to shield herself from a downpour. Middleton wore a black lace dress — one she also sported during her first royal tour of Canada — with a black bird-cage fascinator. Prince William walked beside her wearing a black tuxedo jacket, a white vest and pinstriped pants. He carried an umbrella, too.

While Duke and Duchess’ wedding at Westminster Abbey was watched by more than two billion people around the globe, Gillingham and Carter’s nuptials appeared to be a far more modest affair. Carter also wore striped trousers with a tuxedo jacket, while Gillingham’s long-sleeved lace wedding dress appeared as if it could have been inspired by Middleton’s famous Alexander McQueen wedding gown.

Pippa Middleton added a touch of glamour to the event, however. She arrived wearing a short, golden frock by Project D, Dannii Minogue’s label. The younger Middleton sister also wore gold fascinator, covered in butterflies, cocked almost vertically on her head.

After Gillingham and Carter’s wedding, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge did manage to make a little private time for themselves.

“They went back to Anglesey yesterday evening,” the source explained to E! News. “They are having a low-key night in their cottage.”

While reports had circulated last week that Prince William was planning to cook a meal for his wife at home, the Daily Mail now reports that Middleton attempted to make fish cooked in parchment paper for the prince, as the first anniversary is traditionally symbolized by paper.
