Oscar de la Renta hit back at New York Times fashion critic Cathy Horyn’s review after what he thought was an insult to his spring/summer 2013 collection at New York Fashion Week. “Mr. de la Renta is far more a hot dog than an éminence grise of American fashion,” Horyn wrote on Wednesday. Horrified de la Renta perceived the hot dog comment as a nasty dig and, in an unusual move, took out a full page ad in Women’s Wear Daily yesterday to respond to Horyn in an open letter. “What I do not accept is when criticism is personal. If you have the right to call me a hot dog, why do I not have the right to call you a stale 3-day-old hamburger? My advice to you is to abstain from personal criticism. Professionals criticize the clothes, not the people.” Horyn, who, over her career has been barred from Nicole Miller, Carolina Herrera, Giorgio Armani and even de la Renta shows in seasons past after penning unfavorable reviews, explained, “Oscar clearly misunderstood,” she said. “I meant to say he’s a cool guy who’s showing off his tricks.”
