Octavia Spence’s winning wisdom to Quvenzhané Wallis

Oscar winner Octavia Spencer had some great advice for youngest-ever nominee Quvenzhané Wallis: “Always be yourself.” Spencer was seen greeting Wallis, who was clad head-to-toe in pink, for the first time at the Women in Film pre-Oscar cocktail party at Fig & Olive. Spencer, who won for 2011’s “The Help,” told Page Six, “I told Quvenzhané that no matter what anybody tries to tell you, or who they want you to be, always be yourself. I told her she has a long career ahead of her and she has to stay true to herself.” Spencer’s prediction of a long career already seems to be coming true for Wallis: She was named yesterday as the star of an upcoming film version of the hit musical “Annie” to be produced by Will and Jada Pinkett Smith and Jay-Z. Of Wallis’ performance in “Beasts of the Southern Wild,” Spencer, a presenter last night, told us, “I was blown away by her talent. I felt like we are looking at the next young star, the next Harry Potter.” Wallis, with her mother, Qulyndreia, was the toast of the party, even breaking into a tap dance for guests. Also at the MAC and Perrier-Jouët-sponsored fete was Estée Lauder’s John Demsey, who told us Nicki Minaj would be his date to Elton John’s annual Oscar party. Minaj was recently signed as a MAC brand ambassador. “She calls me Johnny Demps,” he said of the “American Idol” judge. “It’s a relief she didn’t go for Daddy Warbucks.”
