The new version of “Annie” will hit theaters on Christmas Day 2014, Sony Pictures has announced.
Fresh off her awards show circuit, “Beasts of the Southern Wild” darling Quvenzhané Wallis has been cast in the lead role of the contemporized adaptation of the beloved Broadway musical and the “Little Orphan Annie” comic strip.
The remake is to be directed by Will Gluck, who loosely based his film “Easy A” on “The Scarlet Letter.”
Will Smith, Jada Pinkett Smith and Jay-Z are among the producers. The Smiths’ daughter, Willow, had originally been slated to play Annie before it went to the 9-year-old Oscar-nominated wonder.
