The Duchess of Cambridge and 24 scouting volunteers braved snow-blanketed terrain to learn how to light a fire, cook over an open flame, and other outdoor activities in Northern England.

Taking a break from pillbox hats and high heels, Kate wore $500 Le Chameau rubber boots, an army green jacket and $50 jeans from Zara, The Daily Beast writes.

According to the UK Scouting Web site, this was the royal mum-to-be’s first training event since becoming a volunteer in January 2012.

Bear Grylls, UK Chief Scout, said on the site, “The Duchess has an incredibly busy life, yet since she joined the Scouts, she has so generously managed to volunteer some incredible time to help out and get involved with her local Group.”

The course took place at the Great Tower Scout Activity Centre on the shores of Lake Windermere.
