Flacks ‘bumped for Wyclef’

“Political celebrities” are handled differently on United Airlines, according to two passengers who say they were bumped from their flight from St. Maarten to New York to make room for Wyclef Jean and his crew. The publicists hired the same Easyway VIP service to expedite their transfers through the airport. “We were at the gate, about to board, and then they took his group and they tore up our boarding passes,” claims one who asked not to be named. “We did not receive any compensation, hotel — nothing.” The duo were offered a flight on Jan. 7, while Wyclef breezed through to his coach seats with his pals. “Wyclef turned around and said, ‘What’s happening, what’s going on?’ before he boarded,” the publicist told us. “The flight agent told us, ‘Political celebrities are treated differently.’ ” But a United rep told us, “The customers [who were] denied boarding arrived at the gate within the final 10 minutes before departure.” Wyclef was traveling from St. Barts, where he performed at Nikki Beach on New Year’s Eve. His rep didn’t get back to us.
