Christina Hendricks was ‘bullied’ for being ‘a goth’ in high school

“Mad Men” bombshell Christina Hendricks has revealed that in high school she was a “goth kid” with her hair “dyed about 42 different colors.” As a result, Hendricks was “bullied like crazy.”

Hendricks opened up to the Daily Mirror about why she never felt beautiful as a teenager, growing up in small town Idaho.

“My school days were pretty unhappy,” said Hendricks. “I had the worst high school experience ever. I went to a very mean school and was bullied like crazy.”

Hendricks was a target for her peers both because of her unusually colored hair, and her aspiration to be an actress.

“I was a goth kid. I dyed my hair about 42 different colors, shaved it at the back and wore black makeup. Kids can be pretty judgmental about people who are different … I was also part of the drama group, so my friends and I were all weird theatre people. Everyone just hated us,” remembers Hendricks. “There was a long corridor with lockers on either side and kids would sit on top of them and spit on you. It was like something out of ‘Lord of the Flies.'”

But Hendricks reveals that the comments didn’t just come from her classmates. Apparently, Hendricks’ mom was also critical of her appearance.

“My mother was mortified and kept telling me how horrible and ugly I looked,” she said. “I never felt pretty. I just always felt awkward.”

Hendricks says that things started to turn around for her when she was convinced to take photos for a contest to appear on the cover of Seventeen magazine.

“When I got the pictures back my mom and I started crying. I had no idea I could be pretty,” she said. “It just sort of changed my perspective of myself.”

Today, Hendricks is known for just one hair color — bright red. And she is often lauded as one of the sexiest women in Hollywood.
