Andrew Garfield may have replaced Tobey Maguire as Spider-man in the upcoming reboot of the film franchise, but Maguire does not hold any hard feelings. In fact, he says that Garfield’s casting is “[bleeping] perfect.”

The two actors sat down to interview each other for the new issue of VMAN magazine, on newsstands May 17. As they spoke, Maguire revealed that he was excited when he first heard that Garfield was taking on the his old role in “The Amazing Spider-Man.”

“I was certainly curious as to who was going to play Peter Parker,” Maguire said. “When I heard it was you, I was literally like, ‘[Bleeping] perfect!’ I just want it to be great, and I thought, ‘What a great actor Andrew is. I’m glad that’s what’s happening here.'”

Garfield says that auditioning for the part, alongside actors like Josh Hutcherson and Jamie Bell, felt like a “weird cattle call.”

“I’m friends with a few of the guys who were up for it,” remembered Garfield. “We compared notes and war stories, and we kind of got past the ridiculousness of it all …. Knowing that when you take off that bodysuit someone else is going to be stepping into your sweat immediately after. It’s a weird kind of cattle call.”

Maguire stressed to Garfield that his relatively quiet life was going to be shaken upside down with the release of the movie on July 3.

“So much shifted in my life the weekend the movie came out,” said Maguire. But Garfield said that he is prepared for the onslaught.

“I just feel such a great responsibility to the story and to the fans, because I know in my heart how much this character means to people, because it means that much to me,” said Garfield. “I feel a great wave of reassurance after hearing everything you’ve said.”
