When actresses want to win an Oscar they either play prostitutes or ugly themselves up. When actors want to win an Oscar they either play mentally challenged folks or get fat. Mark Wahlberg is doing the latter for his new movie, “The Fighter.”
Shooting resumed this week on the Christian Bale co-starrer with Marky looking less six-packy than he did during filming last July. I’m guessing this is kind of a reverse “Cast Away” move — the 2000 movie took one year off so star Tom Hanks could lose 50 pounds, making it seem as if he’d actually been on a deserted island.
Here, production resumed after roughly seven months off, which apparently allowed the actor time to indulge in all the Cheetos he could find.
Presumably this portion of the film takes place after Mark’s character, ‘Irish’ Mickey Ward, falls out of favor in the boxing community after his meteoric rise. “The Fighter,” which already saw Christian slim down to “Machinist” proportions, is one of 2010’s biggest Oscar contenders.
Oh, no pun intended Mark.
