As the royal wedding draws near, people are beginning to speculate who will be Kate Middleton’s lady-in-waiting, according to reports.

Although the coveted role usually goes to a relative or a close friend, sister Pippa might not necessarily assume the role — at least not right away, People.com reported Tuesday.

An assistant to princes William and Harry, Helen Asprey, has been helping out Kate recently, including carrying flowers people gave her when she was at St. Andrews last week for her first royal engagement with William. There’s speculation she might take on the job.

“She is already working in the office,” royal watcher Judy Wade told People. “And she’s obviously a close ally.”

Regarding Pippa, Wade remarked, “Diana didn’t use her sisters until years into the job…up until then she had someone who was steeped in the royal background, and Kate might do the same. If Pippa does do it, it will likely be on a part-time basis.”
