Troian Bellisario: There’s a really twisted secret in Rosewood

I’m not the only one who has relished the absolutely humanizing emotional breakdown Spencer Hastings has suffered from over the last four episodes — actress Troian Bellisario is also loving the chance she’s gotten to flex those acting muscles in the last stretch of “Pretty Little Liars'” first season.

And this week’s fun house entombment only proves that things will get worse for Spencer before they get better — especially given the dark, twisted secret Troian says gets exposed in Monday’s finale! Our conversation also shed light on her most unexpected on-set moment and why Spencer suddenly bought every hat in town!

PopWrap: I know I’m not alone in saying this, but I love Spencer and Toby together!

Troian Bellisario: I do too! And I love that no one was expecting it – not even the writers. It took a whole season for us to develop those feelings whereas Hanna and Caleb was more instantaneous. Toby and Spencer were like enemies for a while, that’s why I love them together.

PW: In particular, their motel Scrabble game was amazing and led to Keegan Allen revealing the most undercover abs to date.

Troian: Right?!? I had no idea! We were getting ready to film and he takes off his shirt … I was in shock! “Where did you get those, Keegan?!!?” I was supposed to lay my head on his chest, but it’s like a rock. I couldn’t sleep on all that muscle [laughs].

PW: But despite their burgeoning love, the last few episodes have been really awful for Spencer.

Troian: It’s funny because it’s awful for Spencer, but that stuff is wonderful as an actor [laughs]. Playing Spencer is always fun because she is a bit of a drama queen and takes things waaaay too seriously, but she’s also incredibly intelligent. And because all the girls are vulnerable, Spencer tries so hard to hold it together for all of them, so the fact she’s finally cracked and showing her vulnerable side is really fun to play.

PW: The show does a great job of spreading the red herrings around, but things have really honed in on Ian and his glass of milk.

Troian: [laughs] That milk man! I couldn’t believe they did that, I kept saying, can we just get the kid a glass of water? Who does that? [laughs] He’s an athlete, maybe that’s why.

PW: What can we expect from their on-going blame game in the finale?

Troian: The stakes become so much higher — they’re desperate to find out who is doing this, so they start really digging around and Hanna takes the lead because she’s fed up of being toyed around with. They find something out that I can’t wait for fans to learn – the writers aren’t shying away from something that’s really twisted. There’s a really dark secret in Rosewood and when it comes out, it’s not only terrifying but also a total game-changer.

PW: You’re kind of blowing my mind right now.

Troian: It’s really funny, I said that fans would be screaming at their television during the finale and that’s true again. It’s honestly a game-changing season finale.

PW: On a related note, I have to ask you about Spencer’s hats — something my friends and I have suddenly become obsessed with.

Troian: I’ve heard that a lot of people are. It’s so funny. Personally I’m a big hat girl, so they know me as coming in to rehearsal with berets and hats on, so I think they just worked it into the show. But now it’s like Spencer is hijacking my closet – yesterday I was about to put on a beret but had to stop out of fear that someone would recognize me and think I was trying to be Spencer.
