First Look: Paula Abdul’s ‘Live to Dance’

Paula Abdul’s long awaiting (by her, for sure) return to television kicks off on January 4 with the series premiere of CBS’ “Live To Dance,” a new reality competition that whether it was intentional or not, cribs from a slew of other shows with “American Idol” roots.

The obvious inspirations are executive producer Nigel Lythgoe’s “So You Think You Can Dance” and Randy Jackson’s “America’s Best Dance Crew,” which both celebrate sick skills — but the format, which allows groups of any combination, is identical to Simon Cowell’s “X-Factor.”

And since Paula is bringing her signature judging style — overly nice, overly medicated — to the show, it’s kind of like an unofficial “Idol” reunion. But since I love all three of those aforementioned programs, it’s safe to say I’m going to live for “Dance!”
