Barbara Walters has chicken pox

Barbara Walters is recovering from chicken pox more than a week after taking a fall and cutting her temple during inauguration weekend.

The television veteran was hospitalized after her fall and doctors wouldn’t release her because she was running a temperature. Now they know why: The 83-year-old news veteran has a disease many people deal with when they are children.

According to ABC News, Whoopi Goldberg delivered the news Monday on “The View.”

“We want to give you an update on Barbara. You all know that she fell and cut her head 10 days ago, and then was running a temperature, but it turns out it is all the result of a delayed childhood. Barbara has the chicken pox. She’d never had it as a child. So now she’s been told to rest, she’s not allowed any visitors.

“We love you. We miss you. We just don’t want to hug you,” Goldberg said in a message to Walters.

Goldberg also delivered an ultimatum to Walters: “No scratching.”

Walters has been transferred to a New York hospital after being in Washington. She fell on a stair at the British ambassador’s residence on Jan. 19 and hit her head, and was hospitalized for observation.

In a statement last week, Walters said she wanted to “thank all the people who have called, written and been concerned about me.”
