It was a culture clash when the Broadway Association honored theater producer Daryl Roth and Police Commissioner Ray Kelly. Sources said that after Roth accepted the Visionary Leader Award, she invited Kelly to come check out her show, “Kinky Boots.” “I’d love to,” Kelly responded, then jokingly added, “But when you’re in my position, you can’t be seen at a show with a title like that!” A rep for the show, however, explained, “Despite its title,” the musical with tunes by Cyndi Lauper “is appropriate for all ages [and] even those in public office.” It’s earned 13 Tony nominations. Perhaps a win will sway Kelly. The awards luncheon at the InterContinental was emceed by Rosanna Scotto and the commish’s son, Greg Kelly.
