Mayor Bloomberg’s endlessly mocked Spanish-speaking skills could soon improve. We’re told that after repeated outings of his heavily American-accented Spanish during storm press conferences — ridiculed on Twitter feed @ElBloombito — and twisting the names of dignitaries during the Queen Sofía Spanish Institute event last Thursday at the Waldorf-Astoria, the mayor told the night’s host, Oscar de la Renta, that he’ll be taking the Institute’s Spanish language classes. Bloomberg took the stage with mistress of ceremonies Barbara Walters, jokingly calling her his “arm candy” (for Bloomy, that’s caramelo de brazo) for the night since supporters Javier Bardem and Antonio Banderas couldn’t make it.
