EXCLUSIVE: Avril Lavigne on how Chad Kroeger proposed, new music and her run-in with Amanda Bynes

Avril Lavigne gushed about her fiancé Nickelback crooner Chad Kroeger at a private concert last night, sharing the origin of their romance and how he proposed.

“We met in the studio. We started dating July 1 – Canada Day. He proposed in the studio a month later after we were dating,” she spilled exclusively to Page Six. “We bonded through work, music and song writing. We were buddies and it blossomed naturally into a relationship.”

The 28-year-old singer treated fans to an intimate concert at the Highline Ballroom to help celebrate NYLON’s June/July Music Issue, of which she graces the cover. She opened the Aloft Hotels-sponsored show with her newest single, “Here’s To Never Growing Up” that she co-wrote with Kroeger.

Of the writing process with the fellow Canadian rocker, she told us, “I’m really honest and outspoken, so when I’m writing songs with other people obviously it’s for me and it’s my song, so I just say how I feel….It was fun, it felt like we were hanging out.”

Lavigne says her new album – out in September – will be a departure from pop-punk roots.

“It’s very diverse lyrically, there’s a lot being said. There’s other subjects that I talk about. Before it was mostly guys, break-ups, relationships, falling in love.”

For a person who’s been in the spotlight since she was a teenager, Lavigne admits that she often meets stars who let fame get to their head.

“It’s very rare that I meet people in the industry that are down to earth. Normal people [can] get really caught up in their celebrity and who they are as a star.”

She continued, “For me I’ve always made sure to turn it on when I need it to turn on and turn it off when I need it to turn off. I am a normal human being. I like to be home and with my family. I spent 10 years living in Los Angeles and I moved away from LA now to make sure I don’t get too caught up.”

As for as her run-in with Bynes, rumor has it that the aspiring rapper/wayward actress tweeted some time ago that she was going to rap on one of Lavigne’s singles. (The alleged tweet has been deleted). Addressing the rumor, Lavigne said, “I don’t think she said that,” and added, “The only thing I have to say about her is that the one time I met her it was for the Race to Erase MS event. I’m on the board of that foundation. She was in the bathroom and she was at that event, she said ‘hi’ to me, I said ‘hi’ to her. And she was really nice in the bathroom. That’s my only personal experience with her so it was positive.”
