‘SATC’ writer hits back after Sarah Jessica Parker slams ‘Carrie Diaries’

“Sex and the City” columnist Candace Bushnell hit back at Sarah Jessica Parker after the “The Carrie Diaries” got a less-than-flattering assessment from the original Carrie Bradshaw.

In a March interview with Net-a-Porter’s The Edit, Parker admitted that she wasn’t exactly impressed with the CW’s “Sex and the City” prequel series set in the 1980s. “I’m not sure… You know, I think it’s one of those tests of your generosity,” Parker said. “She [AnnaSophia Robb, who plays Bradshaw] is a lovely girl and I want her to feel good about it, but it’s… odd.”

In retaliation, Bushnell defended Robb’s interpretation of the iconic shoe-loving character made famous by SJP on the original HBO series, adding that Parker also played a well-loved character before she hit it big.

“The reality is, that’s showbiz,” Bushnell told The Daily Beast. “Sarah Jessica’s first part was somebody else’s part. She played Annie on Broadway. She understands how these things work.”

In its first season, “The Carrie Diaries” has drawn an average of 1.5 million viewers and might not be renewed for a second season, The Daily Beast reports.

Bushnell, who penned the original “Sex and the City” column for The New York Observer and conceived of the 2010 YA-novel, “The Carrie Diaries,” wants viewers to give the freshman drama another chance, especially because she doesn’t think modern-day Carrie and company should come back for a third “SATC” movie.

“Look, Sarah Jessica Parker is 47. I think with the second movie, Carrie Bradshaw couldn’t be an ingenue anymore,” she said. “But I think they were stuck doing what the audience wanted.”

She added, “Realistically, a middle-aged woman who was married without children would be much more focused on her career and less focused on this Mr. Big: ‘Does he love me?’ … ‘Does he still not love me?’ I mean, I think it was coming to the end of what they could do with the character.”
