Michael Douglas is not the first VIP with HPV

Michael Douglas put HPV in the headlines with his oral-cancer revelation, but he’s not the first VIP to have a brush with the STD by a long shot. The virus plagued Italian aristocrats during the Renaissance, according to forensic pathologist Gino Fornaciari, who’s investigating 500-year-old medical cases involving Italy’s elite using today’s technology. The July/August issue of Smithsonian profiles how University of Pisa-educated Fornaciari researched the medical history of the Aragonese dynasty of Naples, and found that Maria of Aragone, whose acquaintances included Michelangelo, had the disease. The discovery has helped track HPV’s early evolution. “Behind the Candelabra” star Douglas last month linked the type of throat cancer he’s had to oral sex.
