After a drag queen was famously refused service at a bar in Fire Island Pines in the 1970s, a ferry-load of drag queens went over to protest, but found they were welcomed by locals. Now, every year a host of drag queens from Cherry Grove annually invade the Pines on July Fourth. The event usually attracts a few thousand people to the harbor to sing “The Star-Spangled Banner” and watch the queens get off the boat. Previous years have brought in queens dressed as Amy Winehouse, Michelle Obama, Lindsay Lohan, Ugly Betty and Lil’ Kim. We’re told this year’s biggest applause-getter was a Paula Deen drag queen, who came off the boat carrying a sign that read, “I need a job, y’all!”
