Terence Stamp doesn’t think the new ‘Man of Steel’ stacks up

Don’t expect to see Terence Stamp — who played baddie General Zod in the 1978 and 1980 “Superman” movies — on line to see the new blockbuster “Man of Steel.” “I’m kind of ambivalent about it, that it’s being made at all really,” acting icon Stamp told us at a lunch for his latest film, “Unfinished Song,” at Michael’s yesterday. “I think the movies that [Richard] Donner shot . . . they were the benchmark for every one of those comic-book movies that were made afterwards. So, in a way, it’s sad, although it’s a great compliment they’re being made.” Stamp, who was nominated for an Oscar in 1962’s “Billy Budd,” explained that “Superman” was “my comeback movie. I hadn’t worked for like eight years, and then I got that job. I have my doubts that this new one . . . I’m sure it’s bigger and better and louder, but I’ll be amazed if it has the same kind of ironic humor.” As far as the new Zod, Michael Shannon, Stamp said, “I wish that guy the best of luck.” Also at the lunch were Vanessa Redgrave, Lauren Bacall, Carolina Herrera and Euan Rellie. “Unfinished Song,” is the tale of a couple who work through the issues of ageing by joining a choir group.
