Show devoted to ‘Sheep Station’ sculptor

After 25 sheep by sculptor François-Xavier Lalanne took over a defunct Getty gas station in Chelsea, the show’s curators Paul Kasmin and Michael Shvo have created a “midnight garden” at Sotheby’s gallery S2 with a further menagerie by Lalanne and Claude Lalanne, his widow and art partner. Collector Jane Holzer hosted a private dinner to celebrate the show, “Les Lalanne: The Poetry of Sculpture,” which features a white bronze shark, a bronze chicken, a crystal owl and other critters and creations — and we hear her townhouse was spookily decorated for Halloween with a giant spider web, and servers in drag spooned out caviar. Guests included fashion designers Marc Jacobs and Anna Sui, photographer Steven Klein and architect Peter Marino. Shvo also hosted another private dinner at Daniel for the show that opened Thursday. Meantime, Sotheby’s is separately showing off the 59.6-carat Pink Star diamond, which is expected to bring in more than $60 million this month when it goes up for sale. The auction house and its rival Christie’s are also rumored to be selling off $80 million in art this fall from sanctioned hedge funder Steven A. Cohen.
