Son of civil rights icon opening Flatiron eatery

Not everyone can get civil rights icon Andrew Young to travel to New York for a restaurant opening. But his son Andrew “Bo” Young III can.

The senior Young, 80, a former freedom marcher and congressman, is coming from his home in Atlanta for tonight’s opening of Bo’s, a New Orleans-flavored eatery in the Flatiron district.

While generations of Youngs lived in the Crescent City, Bo grew up on the top floor of the Waldorf-Astoria — and rode his Big Wheel in the lobby — when his dad was UN Ambassador.

By the way, the elder Young, a big President Barack Obama supporter, blames the GOP for the current mess in D.C. “It’s the culmination of 50 years of consistent Republican strategy to depict government as the enemy, an oppressor that works primarily as the provider for African-Americans, to the detriment of everyone else,” Young told me.

“The fact that everything came apart under our first African-American president wasn’t an accident, it was probably inevitable.”
