PGA tour champ Rory McIlroy dumped Danish tennis star Caroline Wozniacki after the beauty posted on Twitter an unflattering picture of the Irish golfer asleep with his mouth wide open, according to a report.
Days after the 23-year-old Wozniacki uploaded the photo of her sleeping beau — who is wearing big Buddy Holly-style glasses as he snoozes — with the message “Jetlag? Lol!!” for more than half a million Twitter followers to see, McIlroy, 24, ended their relationship of two years, the Irish Independent newspaper reported.
Friends said the photograph was the last straw for one of the world’s top golfers, who spent the past week in Ireland, where he had dinner and played a round of golf with Bill Clinton.
“Rory was very upset by it and even Serena Williams pointed out — albeit in a joking way — it was a pretty mean thing to do,” a source told the paper.
Wozniacki is “absolutely devastated” by the split and is in denial, the friends said.
A source told The Independent, “There were a lot of tears. She still has her profile picture on her social-networking site set as the two of them in happier times, but I can tell you the pair are no longer an item.”
Wozniacki told the Danish paper Ekstra Bladet on Monday that the two are still very much together.
“I’m so tired of the rumors. They occur every time Rory and I are apart a few days or do not write on Twitter,” she said. “There is nothing in it, and from now on, I just think that I will keep my private life private. It is so annoying that the media and the so-called sources constantly spread the rumors. They write just what they want.”
Wozniacki — who is ranked ninth in the world — met McIlroy at a 2011 boxing match in Germany. His camp would not confirm or deny the split.
“The communications clinic does not comment on Rory’s private life,” a spokesman said.
